| South Padre Island/Port Isabel Schools |
| South Padre Island and the surrounding towns are educated by the Point Isabel Independent School District. The most defining landmark to the area is the Point Isabel Lighthouse and the district takes its name from it. The Lighthouse was built by the U.S. Government in 1852 and a small port community evolved as did the PIISD which was created on September 3, 1927. In 1928, the city was renamed Port Isabel. The total enrollment is approximately 2600 students and utilizes four campuses which include Garriga Elementary (Pre-K through 2nd grades), Derry Elementary (3rd-5th grades), Port Isabel Jr. High (6th-8th grades), and Port Isabel High School (9th-12th grades). Port Isabel students strive to achieve their potential and during the last academic year the district reached "Recognized" status in the state's educational rating system. The District mascot is the "Fighting Tarpons". Each campus encourages their students to participate in extra-curricular activities. Garriga elementary boasts an exceptional choir. Derry Elementary (along with second graders from Garriga) currently hold the 32-AAA UIL District Champions title in literary events ranging from spelling, ready writing, math and oral reading. Additionally, the Derry Dolls serve as the elementary dance troupe and have garnered many regional and state awards. In 2011, the Derry Dolls went to National Competition at Disney World where they won 4th and 7th places in this special event! Port Isabel Jr. High has excelled at area science fairs, UIL Concert and Symphonic band competitions and various athletic events. Port Isabel High School traditionally stands out in athletic competitions with the varsity football team, "The Tarpons", being recognized within Texas UIL AAA schools. Cross-country, volleyball, basketball, soccer, baseball, golf, power lifting, and track and field events showcase a number of student talents. The One-Act Play cast, the Silver Bells Dance Team, and the Silver Tarpon Band furthers student recognition. In addition, students at Port Isabel High School are encouraged to enroll in dual enrollment courses through the University of Texas at Brownsville. This course work allows students the opportunity to earn college hours while simultaneously attending High School. PIISD educates students to become productive adults that are ready to take on the responsibilities to live and work in a rapidly changing world. More information on this District can be obtained by accessing the school's website at www.pi-isd.net. The school's telephone number is 956-943-0030. |
