| LAGUNA MADRE NATURE TRAIL adjacent to the South Padre Island Convention Centre |
| The Laguna Madre Nature Trail is made up of a 1500-foot boardwalk from which visitors can observe birds and other wildlife species that thrive in the area including an alligator or two! This project was conceived in 1990 and was dedicated to the memory of Ed Hawkins who worked on the idea with others because of their love of the unique eco-system of South Padre Island. He approached the Cameron County Parks System with his plan and American Electric Power soon expressed an interest in funding a public facility as a mitigative measure associated with construction of a new electric transmission line to South Padre Island. The South Padre Island Convention Centre was built in 1992. The Trail serves a useful purpose as enjoyment for locals, visitors, and conventioneers. In 1994, the Wyland Whaling Wall was dedicated to call attention to the protection of sea life and our oceans which enhanced the entire area with a common link for education of our precious environment. Other volunteers have worked to establish the proper plantings to draw the beautiful birding that occurs in this area. There is also the Trail of Trees which allows a peaceful place for loved ones to be remembered through plaques and plantings. The construction of a pond and palapa have led to a serene spot for increased relaxation and thoughtfulness. It is one of the true historical places that should be on your list of places to visit while at South Padre Island, Texas!! The Trail is adjacent also to the South Padre Island Birding and Nature Center for additional informative info and more trails to walk! |
